It doesn't matter if you were a girl growing up in New Delhi or New Jersey. You probably found it just as difficult to find a superhero role model who is a woman as the rest of us did.

The reason behind this has never been a dearth of a strong, independent-minded, woman superhero. Most of the female superheroes we love today, were actually born in the 1940s and 1950s, and this includes both Wonder Woman and Supergirl.

The real reason why we were never as engaged with comic books as boys our age were, is because women superheroes just weren't as publicly celebrated as they are today. Their lifestyle wasn't considered relevant or relatable. Their sexualised portrayal made them unrealistic, even "dirty" in the minds of conservative parents.

So, on International Women's Day, let's take some time out to appreciate some of the best women superheroes we've ever seen or read about.

This Amazon princess comes first not because she is the strongest woman, ever (that title, like in the male domain, must go to She-Hulk). Wonder Woman is probably the most-celebrated woman superhero today, and that's not just because of all the powers she has. Wonder Woman, as an individual and as a part of Justice League, operates on the basis of her idea of right and wrong. She is fearless, and fights for what is right, and not just for what is easy. She clearly proves that strength of character is as vital as having superpowers.
